Hey gang,
I thought I'd start a thread to see what's hot right now. So what books are you currently reading? What books do you trawl for every month?
Here's mine:
Secret War - Bendis at his best, but d**n such a wait between issues. Well, at least issue 4 comes out next week.
Marvel Knights Spiderman - Mark Millar's shaking things up in Spidey's world, last issue of his arc comes out next wednesday.
Metal Gear Solid - kind of a guilty pleasure. I've played the game so many times, why would I need to read about it? Well, the writing is straight out of the game but that art. Good lord, Ashley Wood is one of my idols. So yeah, I buy it for the art.
Cannonbusters - Just picked up issue 1. A little boring, but Lesean Thomas can draw. Draw urban anime that is. He's one of the few american anime artists I like.
The Ultimates - Each issue plays out like an HBO series. Very condensed and very character driven. Amazingly executed by Mark Millar and Brian Hitch.
So there you have it. Some of these I do buy regularly, and some I wait for the trades. But I read them one way or another when they come out.
So let's hear yours.
-Vince-

My number one favorite series of all time is Grant Morrison's run on New X Men. In my mind, it is PERFECTION. And teamimg him up with Frank Quitely? DIVINE! Oh, man, I'm getting way to excited here.
(One cold shower later)
Okay, um. 100 Bullets. The Utimates. Bendis' Daredevil. Azzarello's Superman. And a lot of Oni Press stuff as of recently.

Okay, I'll give you "the list" though it's almost easier to list what I'm NOT reading ^_^;;;
Astonishing X-men Batman Battle Angel Last Order GN Battle Royale GN Blue Monday Chrono Crusade GN Daredevil Dawn: Three Tiers Doctor Spectrum Doll GN Duck Prince GN Ex Machina TP Fables Gunslinger Girl GN Hikaru no Go GN Intimates Kabuki Land of the Blindfolded GN Liberty Meadows Lullaby Megacity 909 Naruto GN Negima! GN Neon Genesis Evangelion GN Nyx Oh! My Goddess GN Optic Nerve Planetes GN Pop Bot Priest GN PVP Queen's Knight GN Red Star Rising Stars Runaways Sock Monkey Marvel Knights Spider-Man Strangers in Paradise Superman Supreme Power Tarot Café GN Tramps Like Us GN Ultimate Spider-man TP Ultimates Vagabond GN Walking Dead TP Wet Moon GN What's Michael GN X-men Phoenix: Endsong Y- the Last Man
phew! And that doesn't include the temptation to pick up something of interest of the shelf, this is just what my comic store puts in my file.
I'm some kind of comic junkie... Warning to you all... don't work in a comic store, it will kill you, or at least your wallet.

But yeah, I read Pop Bot as well. The Popbot reader comes out this wednesday.

I've almost managed to make the move to trade paperbacks only, so I don't really go looking for anything on a regular basis (though I suspect I will be picking up several Speakeasy titles regularly, just as a show of support to my publisher and some friends).
The only thing I'm still picking up in singles is PLANETARY, and I'm only doing it is because I know it's finite; I don't like it enough to pick up the collections after the fact; and I'm deep enough into the story at this point to want to see how it finishes.
I plan to pick up POWERS as the new trades come out. Got a complete run of the Image series (somewhere), and collections of favourite storylines, but I took advantage of the move to Marvel as a way to cut myself off the monthlies and just pick up the complete storylines.
Bendis and Maleev's DAREDEVIL I pick up whenever a new trade shows up.
Grist's JACK STAFF I pick up whenever a new trade shows up, which isn't often enough.
Still need to pick up the third volume of SLEEPER--that's the next thing on my Buy List, definitely.
It's a weird thing, working in comics--you get really picky about what you read. Well, I have, anyway. This might have something to do with the fact that I don't make enough money to pay the phone bill, let alone buy trade paperbacks...then again, it might have something to do with knowing too much about the medium, having some of the joy sucked out of the experience by always looking at things with a critical eye. It's the work that manages to get beyond that "how did they do that/why did they do that?" mentality and exist solely on its own terms that really gets me jazzed, at this point.

Andrew - Yeah I'd agree with you on the whole being picky about comics. Once you see the man behind the curtain, you never quite see things the same again. What I usually try to do is just close the critical eye and experience a story as it unfolds. Then if I want to, I'll go through it again, panel by panel and really break it down. The best stories, you just get sucked into them and don't bother with over-analyzing. The bad comics you can't help but break em' down while you're reading.
You mentioned waiting on trades. I've more or less given up on buying Marvel single issues. I have one more MK: Spider-man and Secret War which comes out quarterly. Marvel will seriously put out a trade a week or two after a series wraps up. I like having a whole chunk of story and art in one collected volume. Marvel hardcovers are really d**n good too, a 12 issue hardcover for $48 srp. DC takes longer, but the pay-off is that the trade is about 2/3 of the cost of the singles. Marvels trades more or less cost the same as the singles.
So I guess buying in either format has its advantages/disadvantages.

Ah, well that would explain it. Just so long as you panhandle to buy comics and not to buy crack or internet stock.

Tramps Like Us is the only manga I read. I keep getting it even though every issue is essentially the same. (Good lord, will it ever end?) I also bought Metal Gear Solid for the artwork. I didn't even read them until last night, and now I'm so hooked on the story I wish I waited until I had them all. Also: Bigfoot Full Cirkle (the writing is painful but I'm a Bisley fan) The Goon Iron Man New X-Men (yes, the one about the X-kids) Secret War Vimanarama the occasional Star Wars book Ultimate X-Men Young Avengers (it's almost as good as the OC, har) And that's all of my picklist that I can remember offhand.

I only buy one comic ... when I'm able to.
Invincible
and if I find them, Hellboy.
I lost all my comic collecting flavor a few years ago when I lost track of all the crazy changes in the universe ... and I still have no clue, so I don't bother.

Am I the only one REALLY digging this CRISIS stuff from DC?
Thanks to this storyline, the Azzarello Superman, and the upcoming All Star line, I believe I have officially changed my colors and become . . . a DC FAN!
(Take that Quesada!)

Thanks to this storyline, the Azzarello Superman, and the upcoming All Star line, I believe I have officially changed my colors and become . . . a DC FAN! Blah! I hated the Azzarello Superman. I kept reading it hoping for some semblance of a decent story, and every time I was dissapointed. what the crap kind of ending was that? What was with all the robots and the stupid thing with Zod? My god... I like 100 bullets as much as the next person, but dude, the guy should stick to that. Jim Lee's pencils were the only good thing to come of that book, but half the time I was so bored I didn't even want to look at them. I am however looking forward to the All Stars... so we'll see if DC can win me back. If it weren't for batman and Vertigo titles, I'd have given up on the whole company.

Whoa! Dems fightin' words, Madam. I think what I like about Azzarello's Superman was the fact that the boy scout just got pushed so far off the deep end that even the League had to step in and then the earth itself tried to boot his alien ass off. He just seemed a lot more vulnerable than usual.
I do agree with you about 100 bullets. I'm a HUGE fan. But, seriously, I'm really excited about the crisis thing. Meltzer did a kickass chacter piece with some decent action and heartwrenching suspense (ie Robin's dad.)
Even the $1 Countdown comic rocked, actually making me care about the dorky Blue Beetle. To my surprise, he was mega cool. And then . . . well, you know the rest. I'm actually excited about superheros again, in a big way! And Marvel just seems to be disappointing me an awful lot lately. Oh well. Let the games begin.

What about the Ultimates? C'mon! that big battle with Thor was cool! Better yet: Is he crazy, or has everyone been jerked around by Loki?
Brian Hitch sez you should take another gander at Ultimates #1, when Bruce Banner is looking down at a manilla file folder. Loki has been snuck into the pages of Ultimates since issue 1!
Or Daredevil? I'm never dissapointed by Daredevil... yeah baby.
DC has some good points... mainly Batman related. Ah... Batman... so sexy. If only you were real. *swoons*

Hey Nick I am addicted to the Crisis stuff right now too. At first I didnt know where Villains United was going, but by the end I was in to it. As well the whole bringing back Ragman is too cool in Days of Vengeance. He has always been one of my favorite DC charactors. Great stuff.
Quesada wha? Marvel is junk. I am sorry. Ultimates is the only saving grace here. It is clever and enjoyable. But it is no DC Crisis.

I haven't been too thrilled with Quesada since He let Joss Whedon bring Collosus back to life (after he promised he wouldn't). Bastard!
But truthfully, the world doesn't begin and end with the "big two". My favorite comics are still Indy books. Kabuki, Optic Nerve, and smaller press books from Oni and Slave labour and whatnot.

A friend of mine recently lent me the collected works of LONE WOLF AND CUB Volumes 1-3 in it's original japanese format as a small trade paperback in black and white. Writer: Kazuo Koike / Artist: Goseki Kojima
You have got to see this stuff to believe it! Talk about cinematic storytelling! It is truly one of the greatest comics I have EVER read in terms of pure visuals. I can see why Frank Miller was so influenced by it. It's like watching a well directed movie. AMAZING!

I have a sickness I think when it comes to comics. I missed some that I collect but oh well. Buying online is the only way I can get as much though since my comic book shop sucks in kelowna, plus buying online gets me a nice discount and a more of a fair exchange rate (sometimes).

I don't buy many new comics these days. Mostly back fill my Batman and Green Lantern collection with issues from the 60s and early 70s (getting close to finishing that). I'm reading a lot of older strip reprints now. Things like the James Bond comic trip which Titan is releasing as graphic novels. Scorchy Smith. Captain Easy. A number of the Marvel Essentials. I also try pick up TPBs of story arcs to avoid buying single issues now (assuming I can stand the wait).
The new books I'm reading are: Green Lantern, Planetary, Marvel Team-Up, Batman: Dark Detective, Rann-Thanagar War. Captain Gravity and the Power of the Vril. Really enjoyed the Space Ghost and Adam Strange mini-series that just wrapped up.

Adam Strange was a good series. It led perfectly inot Rann Thanagar War. It was a clever way of going about it, because now when I read Rann Thanagar War and they refer to events in Adam Strange I feel like I was there too, looking back as a vet.
Is anyone else reading "Ballad of Sleeping Beauty"? Beckett surprised me when it premiered with all these new titles. The price is right and you get a strudy story.
I have to plug "The Imaginaries". It came out with a solid first issue and the second one was far from disappointing. Take a chance on this Image Comic.

Did Wildsiderz actually come out with an issue yet? I thought it had a preview sort of thing. What is up with that series?

I'm reading anything from DC Comics right now. As well as the new Hellboy. Even though it's only a two issue run! New Avengers...House of M...are some of from Marvel that I currently read right now.
I really want to get into Astonishing X-men.
So many decent comics out there, so little money. Made a promise to my fiancee that I would cut down on my comic spending. Until I find some work. Hehehe....

What is up with that series? Wildsiderz came out with a #0 (they're marketing it just like a movie, it has a "trailer" and "making of" in the preview issue), and #1 is due out in August, I believe. It looks awesome. I love Campbell & Hartnell and I love teen superheroes. xD
