Not strictly inking per se, but I figured I'd post it here since it's done in ink... It's in progress, and I am working from reference.Am sort of stuck as far as how to handle the leaves in the upper half of the image though, or if I should at all... Any suggestions?

Wow, that's awesome. Do you use tech pens? Great job!

Great work!
For the top leaves, try abstracting them into a solid mass with a single cohesive tone or gradient texture. That will draw attention into the bark while providing an anchor for the boughs at the top. Some scattered vertical elements at the bottom (saplings?) will have the same effect down there, but for a different reason, and would provide some nice vertical progression.
Cheers! -Derek

I'd say it looks good the way it is now. I like how the unfinished leaves at the bottom balance out the darker rendering at the top. Some sections of the tree look very gigerish too.
Great job!

It's good. but you still have a ways to go. I always find that images with too much white space are an eye sore so unfortunatly I disagree with some of the posts and critiques here.
I think you should add more branches or maybe just fill in the back ground with some cross hatching. Keep it dark at the top and taper down to light at the base, that looks really cool. I could do with more leaves too, but not too many if you want it to have a sort of spooky/mysterious feel.
The knots and twining of the tree are exellent, don't change it. This is somthing with potential so keep at it!
[edit]
Another idea is put it at the edge of a cliff, maybe over looking a vast forest, mountian range or a castle atop a giant spire! It would look really neat!
