If you have more questions go to: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON 24HC I'll cover some of the basics here. Format size : 9"X12" will do fine, most will not attempt full page 11"X17" for this event. (Revised March 24th,2005-"MINI" and 8 1/2" X 11" are acceptable) Black and White is recommended, though some have worked in color. The final published book, selected by Scott McCloud, will be B & W. 24 Hours is all we get. Starting from the moment we pick up the brush, pen or pencil at the table. We will record start times. The Real CHALLENGE is that ONE person has to do EVERYTHING on the book. Write, draw, ink and letter. A GROUP effort will not be considered for this as a TRUE entry to this event. Still you are welcome to work as a team. 11:00 AM may be the cut off time to start. Please make it in as early as you can. We wouldn't want to be shorted on the time. There will be no pre-production material allowed. So no character designs or thumbnails until you start at the table. Art supplies must be brought in by participants, sponsors may donate some material- but this is to be determined. We will supply food and drinks. Washroom facilites will be open. A microwave and coffee maker will be on hand. The Mall doors will be locked for most of the event. A sleeping section will be provided, if you need it. Please arrange for transportation at the end of the event. So let me know if you will be or are thinking of participating. I have to keep Mall management up to date on the number of people coming out. All for now, Thank You. GGG. Location....in the Mall.

Hey Gerald, (good job on setting up this whole forum and 24 hr event by the way ) Is the format allowed some deviation? the 24 hour comic site said any page size is ok, and 9x12 is huge for me! even doing standard full size comic pages i still only work 1=1 (6.75x10.5). I'm interested in giving the 24 hour comic a whirl (so mark me down as tentative), but was looking at doing mini comic pages (8.5x5.5) as it might be fun to print a mini of the finished work later... thanks, -d

I concur with Damian. I was under the impression we could work at any size. I myself was planning to do 8.5 x 11. Though it is good to hear the event is starting a bit later in the day.
I myself, and two other VA guys are most likely in. Just keep us updated on those application forms.
Thanks, -Vince-

Hey Guys,
I will leave the size format choice up to the Artists. Standard comic dimensions works best for the 24HC book compilation- for Scott McCloud.
If your not submitting it to him, then it's fine. Still, I don't know if anyone else has submitted MINI COMICS before. Maybe its worth it to send too? Publicity is not a BAD thing.
I need Everybodies HELP! We want to get the word out on 24HC. We will have mini posters to put up anywhere Creative People gather. ACAD, UofC, SAIT, MRC,coffee shops, donut shops, comic stores, schools, libraries, book stores...etc.
Just pick up few at CK, ( call ahead-403-286-0544) and get it out there.
APPLICATION FORMS are in!
Thank You.

sounds good. I'm not too concerned about Scott's book, i'm just doing it for fun. Besides , I think he's looking for content anyway. Regardless of size, if he likes it he'll print it.

FC...I'll have something done up.
I can't do a PDF file though. JPG or TIFF is the best I can do for now.
As an added incentive...for everyone, I will give you the freedom to add on your own illustration- with website contact info.
Paste it over the existing image- just make it all ages appropriate. Send me a low res scan for the the " OK". Print it and post it.
Keep all the pertinent info and contacts- nothing that can get us into any legal problems. Get your copyright on there.
Thank you.

Hye Gerald, quick question: will there be electrical outlets? Y'know, so we can plug in drawing lights or maybe a stereo or something?

Dev,
If we get more than 20 people for the event, we would be able to get CENTER COURT-( where SANTA'S shop is set up at Christmas). There is a power access panel, and other plug ins available.
If we were in the common hall there will be power available. I'll have to see what the lighting will be like some night. I'll see if we could get sponsors for lights too.
Thanks.

Hey Gerald...
I've been putting flyers around Sunridge as much as I can...but the mall ain't to keen on having them on there sometimes. I did have one question on this thing though...Basically we can do anything right? Does it have to be one whole story? Or can it be a collection of your own if you want it too?

Mr.J.
This is entirely left up to each participant. If you can come up with multiple stories to fill 24 pages, more power to ya.
Personally, I think ONE GOOD story would be best.
Concepts and design on the spot, starting from scratch. You can have the ideas in your head, not on paper- we bring our imagination.
Check out the updated list, the Guys are out numbered?
Re: flyers- clear it with Mall Administration, if they have a public board to post, or retailers that are supportive of community events may even put up posters?
Thanks.

Yeah I hope to make it, but I am not promising. I work a night shift that night but I may be able to get a cover for it. Here are my fingers crossed.
Looks real good though, I will at least drop by to see yall there. Maybe I will bring my kid to marvel at the real artists!

I'll almost certainly show up for a little while, but I won't actually be doing a 24HR comic. I likely couldn't get the time off work, even if I wanted to. Which, oddly enough, I did. Briefly. Then I realized I couldn't draw worth a crap, and besides, I couldn't pick up an application form from inside the store. I'll be there though.

Hey there, everyone! Nat Gertler, founder/organizer of 24 Hour Comics Day here, with a few notes for you Calgary crazies!
1. While Scott McCloud will have the opportunity to see all the comics (in fact, he ends up with all the copies you send in), I'm the guy who actually has to cull a book from the mountains of paper that get sent in. Scott will give his input, I expect, as he did last year. (You shouldn't make too big a thing about getting in the book. Creating a good comic and learning what you're capable of are much better goals to have than to try to get in the book.) 2. As far as we're concerned, whatever dimensions you choose to work in is fine. Last year, we got pages drawn on trading cards, we got square pages, we got horizontal pages -- in fact, you can see all of those things in the book 24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2004 (haven't bought a copy? Do! It's good!) 3. We encourage people not to come in with an idea for a story already in mind. As such, if you do decide to go with some unified theme, it should be one picked by someone else and announced at the event itself. And if you'd rather have some individual random seed, we will have some random seed generators available on the 24hourcomics.com website during the day itself. There will be a random title generator, and links to random selections from specialty dictionaries, random photographs, things like that. I realize you probably won't have Internet access in the middle of the mall, but perhaps you could arrange for someone within phone contact who can get on the website. Alternatively, make sure someone brings a dictionary, and just poke your finger in it three times to pick three random words to build your story around. 4. Have fun! Take care of yourself, don't drive home sleepy, but HAVE FUN!

Hey there, everyone! Nat Gertler, founder/organizer of 24 Hour Comics Day here, with a few notes for you Calgary crazies! Nat--If you haven't already passed this stuff on to Jay at Happy Harbour, I'm going to relay your advice to the Edmonton 24 Hour contingent as well, if that's all right with you. We're crazy, too... If we were in the common hall there will be power available. Okay, so just so I'm clear: 1. If we want to plug things in (lights, stereos, etc.), will the outlets be right beside the drawing tables? Or do we need to bring extension cords? 2. Where in the Mall will we be exactly? Are we drawing on the tables in the Food Court? (That's okay with me) Or do we need to bring tables/chairs?

We are at the center Court. Tables and chairs are provided (we had to rent extra tables). Plug ins are on all the pillars at this location. Extension cords may be needed, for some participants...it is a huge space.
Thanks.

I'm going to relay your advice to the Edmonton 24 Hour contingent as well, if that's all right with you. We're crazy, too... Indeed, pass along as you see fit. And rest assured, I was not trying to suggest that craziness is unique to Calgary (Head Crushed In Buffalo Jump not withstanding.) Surely, we can assume no sanity among anyone who chooses to take the 24 Hour Comics Challenge!
