Have you had a brush with a "star" or "minor star"? I've seen the local Guys, sat in a restaurant with Dar Maqbool a couple times, met Dave Kelly @ A Channel, saw Evangeline Lilly wandering at SDCC before LOST came out, but nothing too memorable. I had a conversation with Ben W. a little while back... I'll let him say it in his own words. Hey Gerald,
It really wasn't all that exciting or interesting as I didn't meet him directly. But here's my take, if you'd like to post it.. (but if you do, please don't post my email address)
----
So I work downtown, close to the Calgary Tower. I was planning on meeting up with a friend for lunch that day and noticed the clock had hit about 11:45 or thereabouts. I left the office and started on my way towards Scotia Centre, where we were supposed to meet.
I stepped out onto 9th ave and started walking west, my usual route. I walked past the Palliser hotel and remarked to myself, "Hey a limo, I wonder who's here." But since I saw limos there often, I didn't give it a second thought. I made it to the lights on the corner and was waiting to cross, when out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a fellow in a green trenchcoat walking out of the Palliser. I says to myself, "Heh, looks like Silent Bob."
And that's about when I did a bit of a double-take and turned to look full-on. "Hey, it *IS* Silent Bob!", and then corrected myself, "I mean, Kevin Smith." (this is internal monologue, btw).
A couple of things raced through my mind. "Do I run over to greet him, in a fanboy-ish way, or just stare? Maybe I should go ask him when he's going to finish Spider-Man and Black Cat." Well, as it turned out, I just watched him get into said limo along with one or two other people. Oh well. :/
Later, when I met up with my friend, who, like me, also accumulates comics, I mentioned my chance celebrity sighting.
"So you'll never guess who I just saw on my way here."
"Who?"
"Kevin Smith."
"Really? Cool! Did you get an autograph? Hmm.. Why would he be in Calgary?"
"No I didn't and beats me." (shrugs)
"Well, did you ask him when he was going to finish Spider-Man and Black Cat?"
(laughs) "No, but the funny thing is, that was one of my first thoughts too!"
And that's my story. I apologize for the anti-climactic conclusion.
Cheers, -ben- Kevin Smith was in town promoting Degrassi The Next Generation. GGG. www.ctv.ca/entertaiment

I once had a brush with Damian "Dorkboy" Willcox. Yes, 'tis true! He was eating a bagel. I tried not to stare, but he was sitting right across from me and would not stop talking. I think the bagel had tomatoes in it.
Put me off the whole celebrity thing.
PS - he was very down to earth and just a normal guy.

Lemme see
I had a brush with Sean Penn, while I was travelling through BC. He was staying at the same delapitated motel as us. I think he was filming Crossing Guard or something like. Some crappy flick anyways. Half of this small BC town was in it. I yelled at his when I saw him (late at night entering his motel room) "Hey you are Sean Penn!" and he just waved. He is real short.
Nothing as cool as Dar.
In Edmonton I was on a tour of the leg where saw Provincial Liberal Leader Kevin Taft and shared an elevator with Dr. David Swann, Liberal member and Health Care critic.

I guess meeting people at a convention is cheating.
But here goes ... I won't list all of the creators, because that's kind of a given. But lets just say LOTS
anyhow, Mark Hamill ... he was wearing a 'Jedi' black suit and I almost tackled him by accident as I was running through a crowd (why was there a crowd? - Mark Hamill I guess) but bodyguards rightfully blocked him in time. I didn't even know why there was a guy in my way while I was trying to run to a Mignola signing ... "out of my way, jerk" I thought to myself, but he wouldn't budge ... what made him so special ... I looked around past my own needs and saw Mark Hamill in a small little circle of addoring fans as he moved his way across the floor. So I burst back out of the crowd determined to make it to Mignola.
Well Mr. Jedi pulled some moves and changed direction and I almost ran into him again ... same bodyguard pushing me back ... HONEST, MIGNOLA IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF YOUR GIGANTIC MASS OF A CROWD, LET ME PASS! ... He shook his head and pointed (in no general direction but 'away') ... he pulled some sorta Gandalf magic and I couldn't pass.
Later that day, I met Mark Hamill at some sort of photo op/signing thing ... I don't think anyone knew of it because my friends and I ran around the line twice to get 2 pictures (one picture per turn) ... guess who took our picture BOTH TIMES!? hahaha ... Gandalf the bodyguard.
Met Kevin Smith before he was "KEVIN SMITH TEH BESTEST" ... he said he liked my shirt ... back then it was one of those "Canada Kicks Ass" shirts ... if I was a bit more crazy, I would have ripped it off my back and handed it to him. After which I sat around and listened to Jason Mewes tell stories of fans offering him drugs and women.
If anyone remembers Anti Gravity room on YTV, you may remember Phil (PJ Phil) I hung out with them often throughout the convention because the year before we were interviewed on the show at the Con about our comics we were making.
those are highlights, there are plenty of stories of Comic and 'other' celebrities at the Con, but I won't bore people with them all.

Celebrity encounters,eh?
Hmmm. I've had a few.
I met Kurtwood Smith from 'Robocop' and 'That 70's Show'. He was shooting a TV movie at the time in my hometown of Red deer.He told me he would send me old Robocop promo he had lying around----but never did.
I met Stan Lee at a press breakfast at one of the Comic Castle conventions in the early Nineties. He announced that James Cameron would be directing a new Spiderman movie. He was very friendly and signed all my Marvel Masterworks. I have the picture of him with his arm around me attached to my computer monitor at this very moment.
I had a booth at ConVersion a few years back, and the guest of honor was Dirk Benedict of Battlestar Galactica and A-team fame. I was in the washroom at the urinal, when Dirk came in cursing like a trucker over something that had spilled on his pants. I was going to say hi, but he seemed to be in a very bad mood and I think I smelled booze on his breath. Seeing as it was still the AM, I thought I would leave him alone.
And of course, over the years I have had a chance to meet most of my comic book idols, such as Neal Adams, Mike Mignola, Art Adams, Gene Colan, etc. etc. etc....

I brushed past Dave Kelly from the big breakfast this afternoon. He was drinking a slurpee and was wearing Khaki shorts. Oh! I saw George Takei on the C-train once, or maybe it was just a guy who looked like George Takei. Yeah, that was pretty lame. I did see Preston Manning a few times on the train though. He wears ties.

Joe Clark used to drop by the gallery I worked at. He seems to be a quiet, private personality in person. Margo Kidder was also shopping in the same mall once, while she was shooting the 'Chicks with Sticks' TV movie. At my other job, Christine Silverberg once had business cards printed there and we've also done copying jobs for various film productions in and around town.
As for celebrity sightings outside of the workplace, my family sat a few tables away from Wallace Shawn and Larry Miller at the Silver Dragon restaurant some time last year... and I think that's about it.

I bumped into Donald Sutherland at the Toronto Airport once, literally, I said sorry, he said sorry...it was quite the moment.
I had Owen Hart as a subtitute teacher a few times in Junior High School, real nice guy, too bad about the falling and dying for a spectacle and all that.
When I was at Mount Royal, Dar MacBool (spelling??) was my meteorology teacher for a semester. He really knows his stuff.
At the Oshkosh Airshow I met Burt Rutan (the guy who built the voyager plane that flew around the world non stop as well as SpaceShip One that won the X-prize a few months back). He is probably the most facinating person I have ever had the pleasure to hear speak. I wish I could borrow his brain for a weekend.
Other guy I met that same weekend was Chuck Yeager, the guy that first broke the sound barrier. Huge dissapointment. He was a blatant racist (actually talked about nuking rag-heads while giving a presentation in front of 500 people) and wanted to charge me $20 for a signature.

Sorry, is it bad that I kept thinking "who? who?" after all those names? Mwehehe... exactly. Two actors who are almost constantly referred to as 'oh... THAT guy!' Both are primarily secondary character actors, but Wallace Shawn is best known for his role as Vizzini in The Princess Bride (inconTHHHHHEEVABLE!). Larry Miller usually plays father characters. Both are regular voice actors for animated features - both, for example, have had roles in the Toy Story movies and Shawn is Bob Parr's boss in The Incredibles,

The three years I went to Comicon, '88 thru '90, I met many of my comic book heroes. Neal Adams, d!ck Giordano, Gil Kane, Mike Kaluta, Jack Kirby, Jerry Robinson, Julius Schwartz, Jean 'Moebius' Giraud, Stan Lee, Gene Colan, Karen Berger, Tom DeFalco (okay, I met him, but he certainly isn't one of my heroes), Matt Wagner.
I don't know if they still play there, but the band was Seduction of the Innocent with Steve Leialoha (bass), Bill Mumy (lead guitar) and Miguel Ferrer (drums). Miguel was the cool one because he had just done Robocop. Yes, there was a time when Robocop was cool. The first movie was great.
Saw Kenneth Welsh in a liquor store here in town. Stood behind him in line. Didn't say hi. He didn't look very friendly.
Plus I've met a number of guests at local cons. Marv Wolfman, Val Mayerik and John Byrne, among others.
And we can't forget our local deity Jean Claud St. Aubin. Don't know him well, but hey, he worked on Captain Canuck.

Oh! I just got back from New York! And I saw all kinds of stars!
First night in NYC we went to the "Glass Managerie" starring Christian Slater and Jessica Lange! Woo! Even better; we were in the second row, center. They were practically spitting on us!
After the show, we were wandering about and saw Billy Crystal leaving the dressing room of the theater where he was doing a one man show called "700 sundays"
The next night we saw "Sweet Charity" Starring Christian Applegate. Not so close this time... but I can say I saw her ^_^;;;
but now I have returned from the big city to the mundane atmosphere of Calgary. and honesty I'm relieved. I don't know how people live there... the masses of humanity are overwhelming.
