Hey Everyone!
Anyone notice the new "exalt", "smite", "karma" buttons?
(Look under "location" in your profile to the left of your posts.)
It's a new feature of ProBoards. I don't know what happens if you rack up a certain number of points, but basically, it looks like you can "exalt" or "smite" someone once a day.
So, if you see someone post start a cool new thread, or post something that gives you warm fuzzies, or makes you laugh... "exalt" them! This gives them a karma point.
I'm sure no one wants to "smite" anyone here .
So... exalt away! Give people good karma! Spread the love! Don't go too Karma crazy, it'll get back to ya!
(Anyone remember Karma Chameleon)

Someone should probably smite me for that.

Actually, it looks like you can constantly smite or exalt every time you load up the boards

I'm going to start inviting people I don't like to MIC now, specifically so I can smite them.
Smite 'em GOOD...smite 'em REAL good...

Heh, looks like fiona has charmed many already.
This is a nifty little feature, I am curious to see what comes of it.

I gotta say, I was a little opposed to this because it might lead to favortism. But now that some mysterious person has exalted me, I can see the appeal. We'll see where this goes.
*Edit*- Easy come easy go, my Karma's back to zero.

I don't really like it ... not because I have a -1, but because it ultimately seems silly and can easily be misused.
You could have one person who hates you or something you do and out of this, smite you 20 times a day ... sounds childish, but I'm pretty sure I know where I got my -1 from.
It also can be pretty silly, for one, it can give a false impression about someone , especially new to the boards, seeing someone with -5 and someone with +20 ... people focus on these numbers
And since it's the internet and people can be very anonymous , it adds even more ... at least with eBay and getting good or bad feedback, you have to account for it.
I really think it shows no purpose whatsoever ... and it's kind of proven by Vince's change of mind because he got a 'karma point' ... it easily manipulates how a person can think of someone before they even get a chance to know them. It's like junior high and having nicer shoes ...
that's how I see it anyways. I'm sure we're all mature here, but there will always be a part of us that "hopes for more" and "mopes for less"

Now it starts. The favortism and the vendettas. Hmm, maybe we should hire some Karma Police or something. For a minute there, I lost myself.
Chris, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The karma will balance itself out. I somehow ended up with 2 exalts now. If anything, this'll maybe boost daily traffic.

I somehow ended up with 2 exalts now. It's simple, I clicked the button twice. I could be at +36 right now, I'd still feel the same way about it.

My first exalt was because of the good things you say on the board and because you're a nice guy ... and you draw cool. Oh, but I have yet to get my Hellboy picture, so maybe I should smite you ... I then exalted you again because I wanted to give back the exalt you lost because of someone smiting you, because I don't think you deserve to be smote. See how silly this is.

Silly indeed. I'll try to get your Hellboy pic done for the BBQ. I hope you don't mind dried bits of burger patty on it.

I don't really like it ... Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way as Chris. On the plus side, it's a pretty harmless and kind-of-funny way to express your intense hatred for somebody on the board - much better than posting angry messages. All you have to do is hit the smite button 50 times, and nobody will even know it was you, heh heh. And, of course, it feels good to know that somebody 'exalted' you. On the negative side, though, despite the fact that we all recognize these numbers as meaningless, they kind of do turn the board in to some variation of a popularity contest. It's a 'good' kind of a popularity contest, because it ranks the nicest and most liked people up at the top, but it's still a popularity contest and as such it needlessly ranks people according to what other people think about them. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your personal opinion, but I personally would think it's more of a bad thing. I wasn't going to post anything about this because I didn't really want to make too big a deal out of what is really just a silly, fun little addition to the board, but, yeah, I figured I might as well post the message in case others kind of felt the same way but were also just keeping silent. Okay. All that being said, I actually do think it would be cool to be the most hated person on MIC, so I'm kind of looking forward to being smat, heh heh. And if it turns out that most people on the board actually enjoy this exalting and smiting, then I've got no problem with that at all. Heck, if those buttons had been there since the creation of the forum, I probably wouldn't have even thought twice about them. So bring on the exalting and the smiting! Or not, whatever's good with you.

No, you can't exalt or smite yourself ...
I guess you could sign up with another account and just keep logging in with that account and then vote for yourself ...
I mean ... um ... in theory ... so I heard ... from a guy ... who ...

don't look at me like that.

KARMA is about the good and bad things you do. Not about popularity, or someone did a cool drawing. It is based on your actions. Some have already shown how this can be abused and missused. The numbers don't really mean anything when this happens. I will keep the feature for now...to see what reaction will be. Note: Karma Feature can be removed without notice. Please use it with maturity. Thank You. G.

Hey GGG -
Is there a way I can deactivate my own karma? To me, it doesn't have anything to do with why I'm here. If people respond to what I say, I'll take that as a positive thing, even if they think I'm a jerk. If I'm into what other people bring, I'll respond to that. I've never been handed a business card that had the phrase on it "100 people praised me in the last 6 months."
Thanks, man -

Scott,
If I turn it off for one person, it goes across the board. Ultimately the numbers don't mean anything.
Funny thing is the number of people using it, who complained about it in the first place.I have also seen who is abusing this feature.
Karma may be removed without notice.
Thanks.
GGG.

Like smitting someone who has't been on the forum for a month?

Good call, I think. While I made light of the idea of smiting, outside of a joke, I can't see anything worthwhile coming of it. Like there's not enough negativity on the internet already, right...? A
