Ok, as I feel obligated to add extra thread here...this is for Quittens and other animals...no wait...questions and answers...nothing too hard though.... If you're question is along the lines of "I'ma raging alcoholic currently in a taboo relationship with bigfoot" I probably shouldn't be the first resource you go to.

Q & A

my favourite question!! First off, neither I nor anyone else in the world has this comic. Ok, for those of you that have no idea what this is about, it's a tale of love and sadness...of sunshine and rain....of my experience with getting published....almost. Basically, a chance meeting with someone who ended up liking my comics, ended up turning into me getting published by a newly formed U.S. based publishing company. I had two months to get my solicitation for Diamond and book put together. Anyone that knows me, knows this is completely unfeasible...I'm dead slow when it comes to comics...Mr. "One Book a year" here. So, I got the solicitation info together, it got accepted and put in Previews along with some freakin' big ad. I fixed up some existing stories and did a new short story, as there was no way I could do all new 32 pages in 2 months. It defies my law of physics (comic + day job + wife + sleep + sanity DOES NOT = 2 months) So fast forward, the CD of the comic is sent off to the publishers, they get their orders from Diamond, and basically at this point they bailed out of the comic biz due to "financial reasons". My book, along with the others that were set to be released all got cancelled, and as far as I know, he (the publisher) returned to the former publishing company he used to work for. It was a neat experience. I have never expected anything of mine to get published and it's never something I've really strived for... it came as a total surprise. Though it was interesting, there were a lot of things I didn't like about it... I remember after talking to the publisher about the book at a local show, someone listening nearby came up to me telling me how great they thought my comic was, and it was VERY obvious they had never read it. I'm not a big fan of insincerity. Also, that experience renewed my love for self publishing, which was really what I needed at that point. I've strugggled with the idea of doing comics as a full time job, and I'm afraid it would take my enjoyment out of it. Right now, and for the past 8 years that I've been making dorkboy, workin jones, scooterboy (and whatever I feel like making) I've really enjoyed making comics, just for the sake of making comics, and having people enjoy them....if I didn't I would've quit long ago. Speaking of comics, I will have a Scooterboy #2 coming out this year featuring strips from some friends once again, and also DORKBOY #1! I'm very excited about this one...it'll be full size, and basically be an amalgamation of everything I do (dorkboy, workin jones, scooterboy, 101 things to do when you're young and foolish, etc) as I love working on all my different comics, and now I can do it all in one book! ok, that's all...my fingers are tired.....

no problem...I was actually thinking about doing a mini of the whole experience, as I thought it might be interesting, but ended up working on too many other projects...maybe later though... As for some previews, I'll put some up a little later on as the comic won't be out til June/July. But for now, here is the tentative promo poster..... Thanks, -damian

well, my day job involves working in a stuffy engineering company with people much stranger than myself whom i constantly torment and play practical jokes on all for the sake of trying to entertain myself. I do boring drafting (AutoCAD) related support/programming/database stuff, etc. I've been caught by the president during work hours trying to scrape "Van Gogh's Ear" (a gooey sticky flesh coloured ear shaped toy that sticks to anything) off of the high ceiling of the lobby with a couple of cardboard tubes taped together acting as a giant prosthetic arm, not to mention the time I "accidentally" (no, really) set off a stink bomb in my cubicle which ending up clearing out the entire floor....ok, i've said enough incriminating stuff for now....

Damian, I just finished reading DORKBOY in CHINA, an enjoyable read. Did you happen to take pictures of your trip?
The question:have you had other artist do their version of DORK BOY, WORKIN JONES & SCOOTER BOY. Maybe run a thread see what comes up?
I know your busy now, just some thing to have after SDCC. Will we see you for the MIC BBQ or the August 20th Show?
Thanks.
Have fun in SDCC!(Get a bathroom break once in a while.)

Of course I took pictures!! go here... www.geocities.com/chinadork/here's the picture of the alley that i based page 2 of the China comic off of... www.geocities.com/chinadork/swatowalley.jpgalso, that photo appeared in Too Much Coffee Man the comic, um, # 10 i think? question #2: Um, I've never asked anyone to draw my stuff, might be fun...i'll give it a whirl a bit later. q#3: i'm not sure when the bbq is...if it's before August, it's doubtful...I might go to that show...i''m going to Leonard's show in vancouver the following weekend,. It mostly depends on when they plan to punish me at work (I have a big project to take care of in August), and how burned out on conventions i am after San diego. Oh,a side note on the dorkboy China story...there's a lot of "easter eggs" i guess you'd call them, in that story, as a lot of subtle things were based on actual events, Chinese history etc, and all of the Chinese in the background actually meant things. I thought of doing a companion's guide to that comic, and possibly earlier ones also. Would anyone be interested in that? If so let me know...I won't get to it right away though...but hopefully soon

What other Distributers are out there? Whenever I do a search, it all leads to Diamond ... Diamond is the monopolizing monolith of Comic Distribution. They have by far the biggest distribution, and are very much a business. They accept approximately 30% of all submissions they receive for distribution. Of those, they have a secondary rule, that the comic must achieve a profit point of somewhere around $2500 i think it is within the first three or so issues, or they will likely drop you. There are other companies, but they are all on a MUCH smaller scale. Cold Cut does distribution, and at some point in the distant past accepted mini comics, but now they only accept professionally printed comics. Again, you must submit to them, similar to how you would submit work to Diamond. If it is accepted, ColdCut will generally take 5 or so issues to test the waters and if those seem to sell go from there. Coldcut deals with comic shops, and tends to pick up orders from places Diamond may potentially not care about such as indie bookstores. FM international is another distro, but I'm pretty sure they are tied into Diamond somehow, but as often happens, I could be wrong. I believe Last Gasp (out of California i believe...S.F. maybe) was a smaller distro as well, but I'm not too sure if they're still in business. There are a handful of smaller distributors out there, not to mention "zine distributors" that work on a much smaller Indie focussed type of scene. With any of the larger scale distributors (inclusing Diamond and Coldcut) expect them to give you around 40% of your cover price for your books, which is another stipulation that cuts down the eligibility of distribution for small press type publications. Ok, that's all i got...it's 5 a.m., and i need to sleep..... Hope that helps.

Thanks for the answers Damian.
Will we ever see an "Ultra sized HC Dork Boy?" with limited edition damian figure (300 points of articulation)?
The BBQ is on Saturday, July 2nd...late afternoon. If you make it out for an hour or two that would make our day!
