Hey everyone,
I know I haven't been around much in the last little while, but you know how it is... busy, busy, busy. Anyway, it's been a few weeks, but I had a table at the Toronto Comicon and at Gerald's urging, I'm gonna give you folks a report from my perspective. Bear with me, i suck at these things...
Anyway, friday night was medium busy. i got there 20 minutes late or so, but my set-up was really small and there weren't a lot of people there, so I didn't really miss anything. I essentially had my portfolios and about 30 graphic novels with me, and some giveaway stuff, like business cards and flyers, etc. i also brought with me a couple of sketch pads - 1 9x12 and one 11x14 bristol. the idea was that if people wanted a book, they could get a free head shot and if they wanted a commission, for $20 I'd do it on the 11x 14 bristol. Over the weekend I did a ton of sketches (at least one for every book I sold) and about 3 or 4 commissions. My table was pretty busy and I usually had people in front, and at one point ended up with a small group of "regulars".
Another thing I'd planned was a magician. A good friend of mine does close up magic, and he'd volunteered to come to the show and help me out. So I had playing cards (for his tricks) printed with my book cover, the company website and my personal website. He was busy and even di some magic for tv... of course he didn't ask when or where it would air! Oh well.
My table was between Willow Dawson (Violet Miranda, girl pirate) and Scott Mooney (Parting Ways), with Scott Chantler and J. Torres behind me (Days Like These, Scandalous). Not bad company to be keeping, if I do say so myself. One row past that were the "guest" tables - Brian Micheal Bendis, Warren Ellis, Phil Jimenez, etc. So there were long lines in the aisles. I don't know if I ended up with any run-off from those, but it was interesting to see how long the lines were for those guys.
Saturday was the busiest day of the show, leaving me very little time to hang out with other locals (like Ramon Perez, Kalman Andarofsky[sp?] or Chip Zdarsky) but I did make sure I said hi. Saturday night was the after-party. I didn't like the place as much as the previous year (when we went to Vinnie's Social Hall, a gaming pub); it was at Milwaukee's this year, which has a much more elitest vibe. Not really the best place for a bunch of comic nerds to hang out... Still several drunken photos were taken, which may end up on the internet someday (not from me; I forgot my camera!)
Sunday was a little slower, but that was ok, since it allowed me a chance to get around and get a couple of portfolio reviews and pick up some books I'd been looking for (like Azad's Sammy, whcih is a great read!) I also managed to score a hawaiian d!ck trade (B. Clay Moore didn't wanna take it home with him...) and some art prints from Ramon.
Overall, it was a great weekend and I can't wait til next year!
