Most of us probably got one of these flyers. It was kind of odd the guy just handed it off and went away without any comments. So I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about "Mark"? (Show Organizer?)
I will try to get him on MIC to answer some questions and give us anymore information.

Mark D,
Please give us a little information about yourself, how long you have been a collector, If you are affiliated with any store? Are you a member of the ACCA?
Still a few questions:
1-Have you organized a comic show before? 2- Will you be advertising this event? If so , in what ways? 3- Is there a show "CREW/STAFF" or is this a one man operation? 4- What time can we set up?
I wanted to ask the questions first, just to give us some assurance that this event is worth taking part in and that the organiser is reliable.
Thanks for coming on MIC!
Please keep us informed.

Hi GarSeeYa,
Valid questions, its always good to know a little about a person putting on a show.
I have been collecting comics for the last 28 years with a 9 year break from 1992-2001. I am an independent comic guy and I am currently not affliated with any store or with the ACCA.
I started selling comics about 1984 at shows and later did 2 flea markets in Edmonton (Lake Beameris and The Armory). Also I was a minor partner in a comic store that opened and closed in St. Albert.
I organized a number of shows from 1986 to 1991 in Edmonton and then Vancouver/Burnaby. I would say about 8 shows. The biggest and best show that I helped organized was the one located at the UofA in Edmonton and we brought Todd MacFarlane in for the show.
I moved to Calgary about 1.5 years ago, so I am just getting my feet wet in the Calgary market.
To do a good show you need the crowd otherwise you have a dismal show. I will be advertising in the papers, at the comic stores, and will try to get other advertising though the food bank donations.
Currently it is a one man show, but I will be looking for paid volunteers to help me out. If I get a good turn-out I will look for ways to align myself with other groups to present other shows.
With the August 20th show, Dealer setup will start at 8pm. There will be plenty of parking and dealers will have access to 3 different doors to access the gym.
Since this is my first show in Calgary, I don't mind advice or helpful criticism.
Thanks, Mark D.

MarkD,
You are off to a good start when you came onto MIC. (Totally biased opinion). We have most if not all of the active comic creators in Calgary.
If you want to make the show stand out from other events (very retail driven) how about focusing on the growing Comic Art community and our many supporters. This is just a suggestion, but I always think of ways to promote our group.
I will sign up for your show. How do we make arrangements for payment? If you are up to seeing some of us, we may have the Maple Ink Comic Jam on June 18th.
If you advertise MIC or some of our local publishers on your posters and flyers, we would be happy to help produce your promo material and maybe even distribute to some locations.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Hey Mark...Mr. Johnny here from Vicious Ambitious. I believe we will definetly have a table there. But I have also heard that you might be needing some volunteers. If you need anyone I'll be more than welcome to be of service. Feel free to contact me by e-mail at johnny@viciousambitious.com If there is anything you need to be done right away let me know.

If we get enough of the Vicious Boys together, we might get two tables. We needs the elbow room! But yeah, we can volunteer to help out here and there. It would be awesome to have two Calgary Comic Conventions a year, and helping this new one out would be great!
Promoting is always good. I've walked past the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association many a time, but never actually saw the floor space. Other than that, just remember Murphy's law; anything that can go wrong, will.
Don't be afraid to ask for help and don't be surprised if your first show is a little rocky. Nick and I did the graphics and layout for the ACCA program guide, and it wouldn't be a huge problem for us to do it for you. We hope to talk to you in person in the near future.

Hi all,
Thanks for the response on volunteering. Before I pick volunteers I would like to meet with them first. June is very bad for me due to work and business trips.
If you could send me a contact number that you can be reached at then I can contact you in early July and then we can meet.
Please send your contact info to comiccollector@shaw.ca
Thanks, Mark.

Hey Everyone, If you are interested in taking part in this Promotion, please send me an image (3" X 3"-B&W-300 dpi .jpg) or logo, and urls for links. Mark D. has already started flyer distribution, and he will be paying for advertising in the Sun & Herald, in the next 2 months. Drop me a note if you need to know anything else? G. Previous emails: Hi Gerald, It is a very good idea! I will be away for a week, so when I get back I will update my site. Just send me the urls that you want me to link to. I appreciate what you are doing. Thanks, Mark. -----Original Message----- From: Ggeraldgarcia Sent: Saturday, June 04, 2005 6:23 PM To: ComicCollector Subject: Posters!
Mark,
Maple Ink Comics Forum will be down in the next 24 to 36 hours. I know you want to keep your budget down for the show,so what I'm proposing is a joint effort from all the local publishers to contribute a small image (3"x3") or their logo for inclusion in the poster.
I will keep this as a .doc file and or .eps files. So elements can be modified.
In exchange we will advertise the show on our websites, blogs and forums. If you would be so kind, set up a link to our sites from yours.
I can set this up and layout the poster.(Personally I think it's a good deal for advertising...we are all helping each other out).

This, or something like it needs to replace the existing website. Unless I'm looking at the wrong website, it's pretty bare bones eliciting no excitment from me.
I'd be happy to lend my time to make something up.
Mark, if you read this, contact me if you'd like your site jazzed up a bit. Let me know, unless you have someone or are doing something yourself.

Looking good so far Gerald ... seems more logos are needed.
Is this going to be in color? Because if so, I'd like to resubmit the logo in color. I thought it was b&w.
Or is everything staying b&w and just the CCTF logo going color? that's cool too.

Hey Gerald, I was about to whip up a Vicious Ambitious pic for the flyer, but Chris has a point. Is it in color or b/w?

Hey Guys!
Flyers are B&W.
If the website is re-designed, I would like to see color on there. If we can get local publishers and artists banners on there...better for everyone.
The deal is you have to book a table to be on the flyer and website, then do the banner exchange.
Still waiting for the GO on this.

For the poster - I think it's fair to keep our logos in B&W anyways as to not draw attention away from the main logo and so eveyone else's logo is fair as B&W - if the poster were to ever be printed in color.
On another note, if you go to the website, you'll see the table layout, I've already reserved #26 ... anyone want to be near me? (or far away - I can take a hint) ... that's where we'll be. I hope that's a good spot, I dunno, looks fine.
Oh and Gerald, if you want to send me the graphics all zipped up, you can. I'll be doing up the site. Oh, and if the posters haven't been made yet, it's quite possible it'll be getting a different URL ... so keep that option open. I'll know more tomorrow.
People can send banners and logos to me ... I take all formats except Corel Draw (shudder) ... 60x468 is proper banner size, If you don't know how or can't make a banner, I can make one for you (FOR A PRICE .. j/k) ... just send me your graphics.

This oughta be fun.

Hey Guys,
I've sent a reservation for Table #20, right in the middle of it. I'll have 24HC & MIC Jam samples...and Maple Ink Comic promos.
Since we will have the wall space behind us, I'm thinking of a standardized poster for each artist. Take three 11 x 17 comic pages (or paper) tape them up side to side like a 3 page fold-out, create your own image that can be seen from across the room.
Just a thought.

Yeah, we were looking at the costs of printing posters. I'll let you guys know. The thing with printing on 11x17 and putting them together is that printing (or photocopying) always gives you that 1/8 border, so when pieced together, they have a seem.
Just brought that up in case that wasn't thought of or someone knows a work around ... I guess one could overlap or adjust to the trimmed image. If that's the case, keep that in mind for printing out.

We could have a standard 18 X 20 board and have original art on there? Cheapest way, but you still have to create it.

For those interested, Fanny Fabrics on Shaganappi Tr. is going out of business and selling... EVERYTHING. Like even their display racks and stuff. For cheap!
I managed to pick up a 3x4' wire rack with 12 hooks for $17.
They also have TONNES of plastic and metal pegboard hooks for sale, which are also a possibility if you want to put some sort of display behind your table, etc.

No, it's actually in the Varsity Plaza area... close to Peking Garden, Goodwill, 7/11, etc. It has gigantic signs saying 'Store Closing' on the windows.
