Hey all, Well, Edmonton has a lot of stores that sell comics but the culture and community is practically non-exsistant. I've heard lots of stories about how shows used to be and what stores used to do but most of that is gone now. I assume part of the reason is the absense of "big name" talent in the area. In speaking with some of the people who do shows now, they don't think that the names are recognizable enough to add anything to their show. I understand the logic behind it and I can appreciate where it comes from as a business person. But we here at HH WANT to do more. We want people to be excited about comics. We want it to be more a part of thier lives instead of something they just do. Hobbies require passion from the hobbyist and their "dealer". We have that passion and want to share it with as many people as possible. Most of this is new for me. Having always worked for others, I was limited in what I could accomplish in a shoppe but now, having committed myself full time to my business (or being committed, as it were), I can try and do more. For starters, we want to sell and promote independant comics. Bringing in indys from out of town and creating a special section in our store should help inspire more Edmontonians to get their books done and out there. We want to host a series of forums (workshops, panels, call them what you will) where fanboys and fangirls can talk and learn about the indusrty and where creators can spead the word about their books. With other events, like 24 Hours Comics Day and FCBD, we will always be looking for people to be guests to entertain the sheep ... er ... masses. Happy Harbor wants to work with the little guys and we hope you will want to work with us as well. Anyone wanting to promote thier work, participate in forum, have a special day in our store for yourselves to draw sketches or anything, please feel free to contact us. No one gets turned away and all suggestions are taken into consideration. ;D It's an open call folks. Visit our website to see what we are willing to do and get in touch with us. I await all responses! Jay a.k.a The shepherd

Hey, Jay.
I was so busy focusing on the Calgary indie scene, I didn't even think about Edmonton. I just don't think on a grand enough scale, I suppose. But if there's anything I can do to give the Edmonton comic community a boost, I'm there, and I think I'm speaking for the majority of Vicious Ambitious when I say that.
I met Brian, (I believe that was his name) another HH employee at the con, and he seemed like a very enthusiastic fellow and it's that kind of energy and passion that is required to get things rolling. You sound like you've got you heads in the right place.
Good luck!

Welcome Edmonton to MIC!
I have met (online) some store owners there last year when I was promoting my FCBD entry book Mask of the Gargoyle. They have helped and supported me and so I'd like to return the favour and would definitely plan to visit all the stores in Edmonton in Happy Harbor. Yuo'll be hearing from for sure, Jay!

Hey folks, I've just spent a bit of time surfing through the topics and reading what's going on. First off, I hope great things for your Comic Jams. I've come to love having them (and we've only done 3 ;D!) and I'm thinking of going weekly just to give more opportunity to more people. GGG, I've built my own tables by cutting sheets of 4 x 8 in half and picking up folding legs from Canadian Tire for $20 bucks. I don't know if you can set tables out in the mall outside the store whenever you want but it's a suggestion. I like these smiley faces but really, I'm quite macho. Anyway, with the status of Comic & Toy shows up in the air in Edmonton, I have foolishly taken it upon myself to attempt to organize a series of creator forums over the course of the summer, through late July and into August. The purpose of these forums (as I touched upon before) is to allow greater interaction between people interested in comics and those actively doing something in comics, on any level. I will be looking for people in all areas, artists, writers, inkers, colourists, editors, journalists who write about comics, etc. Ideally, I will moderate a 2 to 2 1/2 hour Q&A followed by some signings and sketches (which could also be worked on during the Q&A). I would like 4 or 5 different people per forum and I would like several forums over a couple weeks so that I can bill it as a "series" and get lots of free advertising. I am willing to work with everyone as far as times and I will do the best I can to accommodate needs if required. (The HH family is a healthily size so there's a few extra beds kicking around here and there). I would really like to inject some life back into the Edmonton scene. After seeing what you guys do down south and the levels of participation you get, I have this uncontrollable urge to CRUSH THEM INTO THE GROUND ... er ... match that level of enthusiasm. For those that have contacted me to date, thank you and I will be posted proposed dates probably by the 13th. And again, I am looking for everyone who has had a "Brush With Comics" to be a part of this to get as many different opinions and experiences as possible. Spread the word and get in touch with me or leave a post. Take care all. The Shepherd

To:The Shepherd ,
We would like to see what the Edmonton group is up to, I could set up links to some of the images you have up., or we can post some here.If you're up to it, direct some of them on MIC, just to show them what's happening here?
With the show coming up in August, we invite Edmonton Creators to visit us and promote their projects. MIC should be well represented.
If you have posters and flyers for Edmonton events, we can get that out too.
Thanks Jay,
Any details on Andrew's BIG release date?
G.

With Andrew, I only know a little from what I can make out between obsenities.
I have posted some Calgary events on our site but doing anything in this town and getting other stores involved is very difficult. I want to get more things going and hopefully that will get more people involved. We don't officially have a group yet, that's what I'm working on.
I hope you are considering doing one of our forums, Triple G. Your voice is impressive and I could really use it up here.
