Hello all,
Here are my ideas for a series of forums to help bring the comics community back to prominence in Edmonton. There is an open invitation to all who are involved in the comic world from the standard artists and writers to inkers, colourists, editors, game designers, journalists who report on the medium and even other retailers. Any one who has insight into the world of comics that they can share with others in attendance.
Please spread the word and contact me asap if interested. Also, a limited amount of "assistance" will be available (or basically, I'll do what I can) for those that need some.
Concept: Creator Forums
Format: A 3 hr forum consisting of a 2 hr Q&A followed by a 1 hr signing/sketches/one-on-one period
Panel Size: 3 to 5 people, ideally each from a different avenue of the medium.
Dates: We are flexible on this as we want to accommodate as many people as possible. We have suggestions for the following dates;
Aug 6 (Sat), 7 (Sun), 13 (Sat), 14 (Sun), 27 (Sat), 28 (Sun).
We are even willing to run into Sept should the interest be there. Start times would be 1 pm and finish by no later than 5 pm.
Location: HH Comics, 10112-124 St, Edmonton
What's in it for you: Promotion, exposure, networking opportunities, selling your product and any other advantage you think you can get out of this (vacation time, change of scenery for inspiration, get out of the water, etc.)
What to expect: I won't BS you, Edmonton's comic scene is hurting but it will be events like this that will spark things anew. Ideally, if we can put together 3 or 4 forums I would expect about 20 people per show (but that's is purely a guess). I will say that those who do attend will most likely be really excited and enthusiastic that these are taking place.
You are not limited to attending just one forum either. Feel free to volunteer for 2 or more, especially if you have more than one talent to bring to the table!
Also, you can bring any products you want to promote and sell plus any book you would like to start selling through Happy Harbor. We want to build an independent section of comics and showcase their talent.
:oConsider this a call for help . Help me bring forth a new era of rejuvenated interest in the comics world. With a little luck and success, we could make this an annual summer event that could lead to increased interest for conventions and the medium as a whole.
I know this may be short notice for some of you but it is only the beginning. I look forward to hearing from ALL of you.

WOW!
This is going well and thank you all very much. To help make things easier, let's do the following. If you are interested, please let me know the following;
1) If you wish to participate in one forum or more.
2) What dates you prefer, in order of importance to you.
3) Would you require accommodation?
4) If required, what level of accommodation do you prefer? (are you willing to stay with a Happy Harborite or do you require a hotel room.)
5) If we could arrange for transportation, is that an alternative/preference to an overnight stay?
6) For advertising, please provide any credentials you would like associated with your name (preferably that are YOUR credentials) and/or logos.
7) Please send (or make contact for us to purchase) any works you intend to promote during your panel. If I have them in the store in advance, we can generate more interest.
As I think of more, I will add them. Response in Edmonton has been good as well so at the moment, I am looking at at least 2 forums (after one day! Yeah me!). If people are interested in doing more than one, even better. At this point, the more we can schedule, the easier it will be to promote and advertise the event.
The Edmonton Small Press Association has also come on board as a sponsor and I will begin seeking additional support for other odds and ends to make this worth doing. Again, thank you all for your support.

I have dubbed these efforts "Comic Talks 2005" and should have a promotional image ready in about 2 weeks. I intend to do a fair amount of PR for this so as not ot waste too many people's times. Andrew has been of amazing assitance and we have begun slotting for the 4 (YEAH! 4!) panels we have planned based on initial responses. Andrew will ask some of you in person next week if the dates selected (again, based on initial responses) work for you. We have tried to put people together who we feel will create dynamic panels and offer different perspectives of the comics medium.
And I guess there's one new question to ask;
8) Are you comfortable having the forums video recorded?
The idea has been batted around to tape all the panels to create a video (DVD) afterwards. It's appealing (if we can get some pro bono work) so I suppose we should consider consent first. Let me know.

The dates we have set aside so far, based on the number of responses, are as follows;
Sat Aug 6, Sun Aug 7, Sat Aug 13, Sun Aug 21, Sat Aug 27 and Sun Aug 28.
Emails have been sent regarding potential dates for eveyone but nothing is in stone as we will do our best to accommodate everyones needs.

I would like to have the logos for anyone participating so that I can put them on our advertising poster. Just email them to me and remember they need to be print friendly (small size, high quality). Colour is fine.

Hey all,
A webpage for the event is up and this week I will begin spreading the word with our poster designed by Bob Prodor. We also have some very good leads on sponsorship that I should be able to announce in a couple days.
I put dates with those who have said they were definitely good for those days and I'll revise the calendar at the top of the page for an easier look on who is on which panel. We also still have spots for anyone looking to pull a double (or triple!)
