EARTHBOY JACOBUS by Doug Tennaple. " ...a retiring Police chief on his way home from his last shift, hits a terra whale on the middle of the road.He discovers a boy inside the whale." I picked up this TP just last week. Mostly for the visuals, expressive lines and works of pure imagination running wild. Doug Tennaple is best known for creating EARTHWORM JIM. His aliens and other creatures of fantasy are fun and stems from deep recolections of childhood "play." This serves as an inspiration to complete your personal projects. Well over 120 pages, it carries some weight. It is a true demonstration of commitment to the craft and a dedication to creating good stories. Have a look ...and maybe we'll see it on the big screen. GarSeeYa!!!

" Moonstone " from DC/Vertigo
I got this trade by luck really. My Boyfriend's mom works at the library in Regina, SK. Every time comics go on sale at the discount table, she snatches them up. some of them are in poor condition and sadly embarrassing or horrible... and some of them are real gems.
I'd never heard of this comic before, but I liked the art, so I gave it a try. The Story is awhimsical tale about a man's life as a boy, with lots of references to classic literature and childish abandon. The story is compelling and the more you read the more you want to read, waiting to see what's next in store for the young hero. The art itself is really charming... beautiful watercolor renderings side by side with simple sketches and cartoonish doodles reflect both an endearing and whimsical mood.
I cried a bit when it ended... sure I choked while drinking a glass of water, but really I was moved.
It's a pricey little number.... $56 CDN for the complete trade, unless you're luck enought o find it in the 50 cent bin at your local library.

Dark Horse has just released a long conversation between Will Eisner and Frank Miller in book form. It will run you about $25 plus GST and is available at local comic shops and probably booksellers.
I've only read the first few pages, but these are the heavyweights of American graphic storytelling and it's a treat to listen to them as they bat things back and forth.
Eisner/Miller by Charles Brownstein. ISBN 1-56971-755-9

I want this book so bad I can taste it. IIRC, the price on the back is actually 30 dollars (not that that should dissuade anyone.) A

Doug TenNapel also did CREATURE TECH, TOMMYSAURUS REX, and a story in FLIGHT 2. He's got an unapologetic right-wing stance that is interesting to see in one so blatantly creative.
He's got another videogame, SKULLMONKEYS, which has probably the weirdest animation I've ever seen in a videogame. It's like Super Mario 3, if Mario were a giant insane duckman.
