When you consider what it's already costing the artists to be there, I am not sure it's fair to ask for more because your event turned out to be more successful than you imagined.
My business response would be, "find a way to leverage the fact you have 40 serious comics fans around for up to 24 hours."
My no-I-in-team response would be, "you're welcome to keep the reg fee." Seriously, I was actually kind of surprised when your guy said you would be refunding it after the event.
Cheers! -Derek

It might be a little late in the game, but Happy Harbour's gotten several different businesses to kick in donations in the form of food (Tim Hortons), chairs (though I'm carting my comfy one from home to use, along with my drawing table), and some other stuff. Maybe it's not too late to get ahold of some local restaurants or something to see if they could help out in exchange for promotional consideration of some sort?

Happy Harbour has the advantage of having hosted the event last year. We were approved by the mall to hold the event, one month ago.
Most of the companies we requested sponsorship from, required 6 to 8 weeks lead time.We are happy with what we were able to acquire with such little time.
This event not only benefits CK, but comic book community as a whole.
I am inviting participants to have business cards and tear sheets for self promotion. We all want more exposure for comic books. It is a shrinking market we need to get more fans interested...if we want to maintain the Art.
One of the conditions to hosting this event was to provide food. We are simply following that directive. We were given the option to charge for this event. If a donation is unreasonable, you may refuse to contribute. If you find you have enjoyed the event and have gained something for the experience...then a donation is not a bad thing.( Added April 22nd, CK Had to rent additional tables, skirting and chairs @ $20.00 per table.)
I don't like to bring things down to a serious level, but if the questions are asked I will answer them.
Good luck to everyone on Saturday...get some sleep. I will try, but I'm already pumped for it.
Thanks.
GGG.
