Hi everyone - I've been on the Calgary comic scene since the late 80s. Did a bit of work at the tail-end of the black & white boom, before turning to self-publishing mini comics. I've been more involved with magazine design in recent years. I went back to ACAD in the fall of 2004 to finish the last year of the degree I didn't get back in the 80s. Now done, I'm back on the gritty streets of the city. www.catspawdynamics.com/scott.htmlIf you visit my web site, a number of my stories are now in colour and presented in their entirety. Most of this work is older. I look forward to bringing some of my attention back to comics. Be seeing you - Scott

Hey Scott!
I am happy to see you here!
"Can't keep a good man down and dreams never die." How did you finally find MIC? I've been trying to contact you for a while. You had a pin up in one of the new Captain Canuck books- how did you manage that?
I'll check out your site and we'll see you at the ACCA show?

Hey Gerald -
Derek Mah told me about it and so I went looking. Yes, I will most likely attend the ACCA show, but as a collector, not an artist. I don't have any new comic work to speak of just yet.
Re: Captain Canuck. I emailed the Langois boys (who produced the mini) and they liked my piece, so I sent it to them. Nothing more than that.
Thanks for the welcome -
Scott

Scott,
Very GOOD work!
Going back to school as a mature student...is something I have thought about too. A refresher course is always beneficial.
We want to see some COMIC work again, someday? Just for fun...but it should always be fun to do.

Scott, it is soo great to see you here! I rave about Three and the Historical Society on many different occasions, as I think it was one of (if not THE best) indie comics to come out of Calgary and I long for the day when you will create something new!
And for crying out loud, you were the FIRST person to ever buy one of my comics! That's just cool.
See you at the con!

Ah, you're the infamous Scott Dutton! Mr. Nick gushes over your work every other time we meet up. I took a quick browse of your site and you've got a really cool retro style. I'd love to get a copy of the Three & the Historical Society.
Welcome to the board, see you 'round.

If you live long enough, you first become out of style, and then you're retro and cool once more.
Thanks for the welcome folks. Fiona, you rock.

Welcome aboard, Scott!! I remember seeing lots of your stuff when I was first getting my crappy comic into stores, terrific work! ....and the closure of "Books and Books" oon 17th wasn't due to me and the bad luck I've had of stores closing shortly after I asked them to carry my books...no, really....

Dutton... why does that name ring a bell?
Do you have a sister? Or a really sweet lookin' brother? Maybe it was you... and the soft scent of magnolias.
Welcome to the board.

Scott! I was just at your website and saw the most incredible piece! They're all great, but the one I'm referring to is the one which depicts the american flag in blood. This blew my freakin' doors off!! I can think of no stronger image to symbolize the 'American Crusades'! Was this done digitally, or by hand? -Rik

Hi Rik - The drawing was done in ink. Then it was scanned and in Photoshop I did colour separations to take most of the ink lines off the black plate to turn them into colour. It's a technique I also used for the Hudson's Bay illustrations in the same section on my website, and it comes out of my comic book work. I'm not much for the heavy gradients and specular highlights that many current comic colourists use. I'd rather extend the more traditional graphic printing techniques. Doing something like the cross illustration in pre-Photoshop days took a lot of planning and proofing to get right, and was out of the reach of most small practitioners. Now getting good results is quick and easy and well within the tools we have at hand. If you look at Klaus Janson's colour techniques when he was inking Miller on Daredevil, he often pulled things off the black plate. And I believe Neal Adams brought those techniques to comics with his experience in advertising before he came into comics. - S p.s. the inspiration for the illustration was an article on www.rabble.ca. It's a great news site which takes a more moderate view and does its best to provide a rational response to corporate media. Well worth a look.
