Greetings All!
My real name is Anna Bortolotto, I live in Calgary, am at the cusp of that age where it's no longer polite to ask me my age, and I am an aspiring writer in various genre and media. In my day job I work in the oil and gas industry (surprise-surpise living in Calgary), and when my writing income outstips my day job income, I hope to make writing my career. In the meantime, a girl's got to eat!
I took part in the 12 Hour Comic Challenge up in Edmonton back in October at Happy Harbor and now I'm hooked. I'm not an artist by any means, but I can put a decent story together and that's the home I'd like to find in comics; you know, outside of the home I already have as a reader/collector.
I've been a friend of Andrew Foley's for years (yes, that's plural, hard to believe, isn't it?) and have mentioned many times that I have several stories that I think are meant to be graphic novels. So with the experience of the 12 Hour Challenge under my belt, and his "encouragement", I'm now preparing pitches and synopses/outlines/treatments in preparation for bigger things.
Andrew tells me that there is a thriving and active comics community here in Calgary, so here I am hoping to find a place to squeeze in. I know I've met a number of you already at the various shows, in the shops, or even at Conversion (of which I have been both an organizer and active participant). I am also a member of IFWA (Imaginative Fiction Writers Association) and ARWA (I'm too embarrassed to admit what that one is, so you'll have to look it up yourself; they have fantastic skills sessions and workshops!)
Most of my interests with writing for comics would be whatever the comic equivalent is to dark fantasy. That said, I also have plans for a humourous animated piece, and more mainstream plays and screenplays. All I know right now is "man! do I ever have a lot to learn!"
I'm looking forward to getting to know the Calgary community and many of you.
