Hey Flo,
That's a nice range of stuff you've got there. You're one of the few people that can actually pull off an anime kind of style. You're perpective work is also pretty good. I really like those vehicles.
I read in the intros that you plan to get a degree in Vis-Comm. What exactly did you want to do with that? From the work here, I could easily see you doing concept art or fashion design in 4 years.
As for an crits, I really don't see anything that would need great improvement at this point. You're schooling right now, so I guess growth is bound to happen.
Other than that, keep it up.

Florence!!! You rock! The only reason you should go to art school is to teach. Thanks for recommendiing the Hi-Tec-C pens. I've been using them for everything from sketches to finished work. Here's a panel from "Til Nara Saga" that used the size 3 pen on Canson bristol: See you at Westercon this year? Cheers! -Derek

Oh, I forgot to say ('cause I was so excited about the pens) that I really like your line. Very fluid and rhythmic. I also like the loose panel borders on the top page and the nice sense of gravity on your figures.
Cheers! -Derek

I especially like the sketched from images 5 and 6. I think in the side profile of the girl in image 3, her thigh is too long. I like to measure thigh length to be equal to the distance between the hip and shoulder for the torso. Love the Alita pic though, are you reading Last Order?

Thanks all!
MrVince> I'm looking at a wide range of employment opportunities, including concept art for games, print, television and film. I'll also be actively marketing myself as a freelance illustrator. At some point I'd love to work on sequential art, but I really haven't put much time into it, so I don't really have any samples that are up to par at this point.
Derek> That's awsome! It's great to see those are working out for you! RE: westercon, things have been a bit iffy lately. I'll be doing some travelling this year because my cousin and her fiance will be married in late June, have been seriously considering attendance at Toronto's 'Anime North', which is host to around 8000 people. I was also recently passed by Dragon*Con's art show jury, so I'll be gearing up for submission of work to their show. As far as where that leaves me for Westercon, I'm not very sure. As I've mentioned in the past, the cost is rather steep. I've also learned that I will need to purchase a Mac Powerbook if I get in to the Visual Communications program, so money will be especially tight.
Temperance> Cool - thanks. Will go back and fix. RE: Battle Angel has been an obsession of mine for at least 7-8 years, if not longer. I currently own the complete original publication in English(v1-9), LO 1-4 (english), LO 1-5 (Japanese), a few of the newer edition of the original series, a few of the individual comics in English, and one or two of the Ultrajump issues LO was published in. Am also looking forward to the movie slated for 2007 release. Hopefully James Cameron gives the series the respect it deserves.

First let me say, i love your fluidity - that's really hard to come by, sometimes (I find my own figures stiff and overworked from all too often). Looking at your art is really a joy and I'm glad you're posting it up for us to see. That said, I find you tend to force your perspective frequently. there was a pic I saw on grafiksismik that had a really short 2 point perspective and I'm seeing similar things here. My solution to a similar problem was a 20" ruler! For most of my 2 and 3 point perspectives, I just put one end of the ruler on the horizon line where the end of the object I'm drawing will be and the other end becomes my diagonal vanishing point.... it helps prevent that fish eye lense look that 2 vanishing points too close together tend to create...

What size paper are you working on Florence? How's the grain? Smooth, rough?

Thanks I think I definitely need to follow your advice and spread out those VPs. They make work in theory, but they are definitely difficult to work with when other more organic elements are introduced. Well... i have a portfolio submission coming up - perhaps I can think up something for that. THanks

What size paper are you working on Florence? How's the grain? Smooth, rough? All of the pages posted here are from my sketchbook, which is basically a pack of Georgia-Pacific cover stock split up in three equal portions, then coil bound. The stock's not anywhere as smooth as marker layout paper, but is still smooth enough that texture won't show up on a scan. But I'll pretty much draw on anything.

Have you ever worked from a plot or script? I don't think I've seen any of your sequential work (if you've done any).
I've got a sample partial plot and partial script that I test artists' general drawing and storytelling skills on. If you're interested in a little test, let me know. The script is designed to showcase different artistic styles, so if you want, you can incorporate two styles into the story. I'll give you a full assessment of your work once it's completed and you can post the pages here for critique.

I don't have many presentable sequentials at this time, but would definitely be willing to work on some once classes and exams are over (which should be in about two weeks or so).

Really good work FC! I like the first image because it's very moody. But still your work has some characters. Keep it up!

Here's a bit of new stuff - A bit of concept work - Quick colour sample over line-art provided by Golden Goat Studios. Completed just under 2 hrs. Will probably put in more work on it, but I've an itch to work on other stuff right now, so this how I'll post it at the moment. Acrylic painting, work in progress. Have done more since this scan, will update when i get a chance. (Flowers brighter, more defined, clothing and flower in arms more defined) Work in progress - Fooling around a bit w/ composition and colour at the moment. Wavering on colours for costume, dragon, background. Probably should have done thumbnails first... Thighs will probably be covered in final version...

Haven't posted anything here for a while... Here's a bit of stuff from here and there in my SB. Some pieced together from seperate pages, some from whole pages. Figured I'd compress the amount of files that would have to be loaded. Anyhow... 1 2 3 My attempt at drawing Igor Kordey. 4 5 Urrr... product of heartburn, late night, Star Wars challenge. 6 7 Meant to be more of a compositional sketch than a tonal sketch, so pls forgive the tonal inconsistencies. Might be developed further at a later date. 8 9 10

Hey FC, great stuff as always. I love the Chun Li pic and the watercoloring on the tree is immaculate. I'd love to see a Batman done in your style/mediums. Hmm, that Chun Li pic makes me think we should have a Street Fighter drawing jam for one of the months.
Anyways, keep it coming.

Very nice work indeed. What size do you draw on just for curiosity sake. You have a very smooth clean line, confidence shows there, and I have to agree on the water colour, very nice. I like your style.

Thanks!
My work is generally pretty small. Of late, I've been drawing in sketchbooks 8.5x11" and smaller, for portability's sake. Heads usually measure no bigger than around a quarter or a loonie, full figures usually half a page to three quarters of a page.

Those are just beautiful... I love your fantasy stuff the best. It looks like you put more thought into drawing trees than most people.

Thanks Fiona! Anyhow - here's a little more of what I've been working on lately - in particular, colours for a Chinese mythological figure for a Mid-Autumn Festival poster. Will be adding moon to a darkened background, clouds to the bottom and left, once i figure out how i used to do clouds again... (it's been a while)

The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now" Is going through my head and it just seems to fit with your stuff. Kinda Cool.

Your stuff is very technically accomplished, but for me it lacks spark.
I'd like to see you do some really rough stuff... no underlines, mess up the paint a bit, throw proportion to the wind a little bit. I don't mean a full-on Rick Sealock, but a little bit more exaggeration might help to make your style pop a bit more.
Best, Kelly
