For anyone wondering how a Comics Jam works, there is a short illustrated description here: jam.attoboy.com/whatis.htmlThis is how Andrew ran the Jam at Con-Version XX. It worked out pretty good and drew even more artists the following year. Taking cues from the Edmonton HH Group, THIS is what they have been doing. Have a look, theres some good stuff! I am taking an informal list of those who would like to participate. Once a month for now, see how it goes. Ideally 5 or more people. First day Saturday June 18th?12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. CK is the first choice, but I am thinking of asking other stores to host the event- just to keep things interesting. Let me know what you think? Thanks. GarSeeYa!!!

Yes - I absolutely love this idea, in whatever format it would take. I'd be up for it.

Sounds like utter madness, the best kind of madness. You might have to sign me up once the details come out of the ether.
So just to clarify, there is one paper per person and all papers get passed when the time is up. So then everyone is drawing at the same time. So we all end up with like 8 one page stories. That is too d**n cool.

Ah! I love those! I've always wanted to do one, but I could never wrangle enough artist friends to do it with me ^_^ Yeah I'd love to take part!

Or one 8 page story ... ? I think I'd prefer to have multiple stories - that way, every participant has the opportunity to start a comic and to end one (probably not the same one, though, heh heh). And you'd probably get a lot more diverse comics that way. But making one single comic by having all the pages done at the same time, by different people, is also a very strange and cool idea, heh heh.

Well it looks like we will have enough people interested. The number of participants will determine the panel and or page count. If we had 12 people we could have a two page story with six panels each.12 separate stories=24 pages=one book.
Added June 8th-Location preference.
We'll see how this goes...so far:
1-CogNoman-CK 2-Mr. Vince-CK 3-Snowman-CK 4-Temperance 5-GGG-CK 6-Mr. Johnny 7-Cil 8-Mr Nick 9-Fiona-CK 10-trixingee
I may have to put a cap on at 12 or we end up with two groups?

I personally wouldn't advise trying to jam more than six panels in per page (though a two page story has some potential...think I'll bring that up at the next Harbor jam...).
Also, it'd probably be a good idea to have someone bring a standard size paper everyone uses (as Derek, who had to scan the 14x17 inch sheets from the first Con-V Jam will attest, I'm sure), and possibly some sort of standard drawing tool/ink quality as well (we haven't done that with the HH jam, but I know there were some issues from the Con-V jam, esp. when you had one person doing panels in 4H pencil and the next guy using sharpies.)
Depending on how it plays out, you may also want to consider a standard panel size, as well. Again, this is something that hasn't been instituted in any of the jams I've been involved with, but I seem to recall one Con-V jam where the first guy filled up a lot of space on his page, leaving everyone else working in a very limited space.
Personally, I like the flexibility of not having standard panels (I frequently do two panels, myself), but I can see where it might become an issue with some people. Just something to consider.
Most important of all, of course, is having fun.

A note on Batman Begins and other movies--if someone has an AMA card, you can purchase cut-rate movie passes for movies (Cineplex Odeon movies, anyway, not sure about Famous Players...). T and I got passes for RoTS on its first Friday night for seven bucks a pop that way--they were something like 13 at the theater. AMA cardholders are allowed to buy sixteen of these passes a day.
Not sure where the AMA HQ(s) are in Calgary, but if you're big into movies and/or economizing, and you have an AMA card or know someone who does (the passes can be used by anyone), it might be worth looking into...

Oh yes, and we should set this thing up around the counter at Comic-kazi, so I can draw and work my shift simultaneously. What do you mean, inconvenient?

Hey,
There is a BUG(GLITCH) in the MIC Jam! Mall management is asking for $$$ for tables and chairs for the event. They want $$$ for a whole week. We need it for one afternoon.
I am open to any suggestion.
I will see if there are other places available for this event.

I am open to any suggestion. A question you might want to ask is what the group will be looking for from the jam--skills polishing, or community-building. The Montreal Comics Jam, which is one of the more famous ones, if not the MOST famous one, takes place at a bar. If all-ages participation isn't an issue, I can see a definite argument in favour of having something like a jam take place at a relatively quiet pub--it would emphasize the social/fun aspect of it more than the craft, which would be my focus. If not a pub, a cafe could work--there was a place called the BadAss, I think, on seventeenth for awhile where prose writers would meet irregularly to work on their stuff and chat. It's closed now, unfortunately. On the other hand, if the group's looking for exposure, then a public location like the mall is a must. If it's skills polishing, somebody's house or someplace quiet/out of the public eye would work best, I'd think...maybe the back room at the Sentry Box, if it's available... A

If anyone lives in an Apartment building, usually they have those open rec rooms that can be reserved for a day.

Mall management is asking for $$$ Hmm... I think I speak for all us cheapskates when I say: I'd prefer to not pay for the tables and chairs if I didn't have to. Anywhere free is okay with me. (Edit: for any who noticed, this post was originally much longer, but I realized most of it was pretty redundant)

I have contacted three possible host for the event, still waiting for a respose. I will keep everyone up to date. 8:04 PM Update. Kelly at Redd Skull Comics is willing to host an MIC Jam, but is only able to accomodate 6 peolple at the most. CK can possibly host a group in store as well, we just have to break this up into two parties and meet-up to compare pages. I'm thinking North Hill Mall, do the Kinko's thing- story swap. Then DQ or Chilis' after? This is not final. Still need approval from CK and Kelly. Just a note-next comic show:

Yeah! the Sentry box could work. However on a weekend you HAVE to reserve space in advance and tell them how many people are showing up. They have lost of tournaments and events on the weekends that require lots of table space.
Plus there is that scary gamer stench you'll have to get used to. Fortunately I'm immune... or can hold my breath a long time.

The two group thing'll will probably have to do. CK or Redd Skull's fine with me. I dunno about the Sentry Box though, I get a bad vibe from them whenever I walk in.
So afterwards, we go to North Hill and Kinkos to print up some copies for everyone, correct? Then we chill and eat somewhere afterwards. Im down for all of that. We'll have to work out who owns which original pages. I suggest the person that starts the first panel be the one to own and subsequentially photocopy that particular page. Easy.

Yeah, that sounds the most reasonable solution... and it's not like you don't get the other pages, just not the originals.
Well... I used to work at the Sentry box, so I think you'll be safe under my wing.

Current Update!
Kelly at Red Skull Comics is willing to host FIVE Artists. Comic Kazi will have seven as a limit. We have ten people on the list so far.
Fiona & I will be at CK. Let me know if you have a preference to location. If we do this again we can mix up the group or switch locations.
The person who starts the page, keeps the page.We all get a copy of the work done. I'm suggesting the TWO page format, ten minutes per panel=two hours time?
On Saturday June 18th,starting at 12:00 noon.

The two group thing'll will probably have to do. Personally, I would prefer it if all of the participants got to stay together. But, yeah, I'm totally okay with however we decide to do this, and, of course, if this way doesn't work too great, then we can change it for next time. Any location is fine with me, and if we do get more than 12 people, I've got no problem with going to the Sentry Box (or wherever else).
